Why is Bob Dylan still popular today?

May 25, 2011

“At heart, Bob Dylan is a storyteller and he takes the tradition of old folk music tunes, and those folk music tunes pass from generation to generation, and Bob Dylan’s songs passed from generation to generation.” (Ed Bradley)

“I don’t think I’m a folk singer. You’ll probably call me a folk singer.” (Bob Dylan)

True, Bob Dylan’s a storyteller. True, some of his songs are reminiscent of the folk tradition, amongst other genres. But what is the real reason why Bob Dylan is still popular today? Simply because he’s a incredible musician and “poetic” lyricist in his own right*. Let the man speak for himself in his 1979 album Slow Train Coming.

*Ed Bradley once said that Dylan’s lyrics were both “poetic and powerful”.

I couldn’t agree with you more. Dylan will last a lot longer than most pop stars or famous artists because his lyrics mean something they capture the spirit of the times in which he wrote

check out this article i wrote with a similar message not long ago http://www.theedgesusu.co.uk/records/2012/03/02/the-songs-of-bob-dylan-chimes-of-freedom/

      Thanks Julien.

And what’s amazing is that, although he captured the spirit of the times, he was somehow separate from them.

Listening to Slow Train Coming for the first time in what seems like ages – such great music.
